The Coptic Icon of the Resurrection

The Coptic Icon of the Resurrection (Anastasis) portrays Christ’s victory over death and SAVING HUMANITY FROM HADES.

It shows Christ descending into Hades to rescue humanity, symbolized by His upward-flowing robe. Beneath Him lie the shattered gates of Hades and scattered keys, representing His complete authority over death and His triumph in breaking its power.

At the center, Christ lifts Adam and Eve from their tombs, revealing the redemption of all humanity—beginning with the first humans—and pointing to the future resurrection of all at the final judgment.
